Buffalo Niagara duplicate bridge notes: October 3, 2026

The Buffalo Bridge Center, 60 Dingens St. off Exit 1 of the northbound I-190, is offering a Captain's Swiss teams game to help non-life masters get more experience at 1 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 10, It will award silver master points and it works like this:

Teams will include three non-life masters, headed by one life master, who will be captain. Teams will be drawn randomly by the captains. They will play three rounds of six boards each, giving each of the non-life masters to have the captain as a partner.

Congratulations to Jay Costello, who earned the most master points of all players at the Buffalo Fall Sectional Tournament Sept. 25 to 27 at the Buffalo Bridge Center. He collected 17.68 points. The rest of the Top 10 winners included Saleh Fetouh, 12.74 points; Donna Steffan, 12.32; Judy Graf, 12.15; Mike Ryan, 11.71; John Ziemer, 11.35; Chris Urbanek, 10.34; Linda Burroughsford, 8.95; Bud Seidenberg, 8.78; and Bill Rushmore, 8.10.

There’s a regular lineup of in-person games at the Bridge Center from Tuesday through Friday with party games once a month on weekends, usually on Sundays, except during football season. Need a partner for the Bridge Center’s party games? The club has started using a Google form to help players match up. To find it, go to BBC website and click on Announcements. A new 10-week series of bridge lessons the Bridge Center, an introduction to Basic Bridge, begins Thursday, Oct. 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. For more info, call or text Ruth Nawotniak at 716-949-7574.

Linda Burroughsford will lead the next round of lessons at the Bridge Center, starting in November. The topic: The two-over-one bidding system, including the forcing 1 No Trump, rebids and Bergen raises. The course begins Monday, Nov. 2, and continues most Mondays from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Cost is $175. An online game for players with fewer than 900 master points is hosted by the Bridge Center at 7 p.m. Monday on RealBridge. For more info, including a player guide, visit realbridge.online.

In addition, the club hosts a supervised play session for players who want to gain some experience and get some advice to improve their game. It’s from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays and it’s been a great success. Small games now have been added to the session. All are welcome. The Bridge Centre of Niagara (BCON) in St. Catharines, Ont., offers face-to-face games five days a week and Saturday nights at its club in Tremont Square opposite the Pen Centre shopping plaza off Glendale Avenue. Website is bridgewebs.com/Niagara.

BCON has a series of bidding workshops at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays with Doug Dolbear that are aimed at intermediate and advancing players. Cost in Canadian funds is $30 each. Maximum of 12 students per session. For more info and registration, email dougdolbear@gmail.com.
