Friday, June 21, will be the Longest Day in more ways than one. On the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, bridge players across North America will play their favorite game from sunrise to sunset to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
There’s a choice of Longest Day games in the Buffalo area.
Western New York Unit 116 is sponsoring a series of games in the Bridge Center of Buffalo, 3362 Sheridan Drive, Amherst, beginning with an open pairs game at 6 a.m., followed by games at 9:15 a.m. (non-life masters), 12:30 p.m. (open pairs), 3:45 p.m. (non-life masters) and 7 p.m. (open pairs). Sessions will run 18 to 24 boards and award extra master points. Fee is $5 per game. Door prizes will be awarded. For info, call Kathy Pollock at 688-0054.
In addition, expert player Jay Levy and a team of hand-picked players will play for 16 hours that day against challenging teams in one-hour rounds of eight to 10 boards. Matches will be handicapped. Teams which defeat Levy’s team will win a game with one of his team’s players at a future date. Fee for teams is $20. For info, call Levy at 861-1056.
The Airport Bridge Club, 247 Cayuga Road , Cheektowaga , will play an entire schedule of open pairs games with free food, starting at 9 a.m. with breakfast. New games will begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with lunch between games; 3 p.m. with snacks; 5 p.m. with supper; and 7 p.m. with desserts. Games will be 15 to 18 boards and award extra master points. The Bridge Center of Buffalo this week offers supervised play at noon Monday, June 17; NAP qualifiers Tuesday, June 18, and both games on Wednesday, June 19; and a championship game at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, June 20.

The Airport Bridge Club has Sectional Tournament at the Clubs pairs games at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. today, Saturday, June 15; and a STaC Swiss teams game with free pizza at 11 a.m. Sunday. The club has NAP qualifies at all games Monday, June 17, to Thursday, June 20, including the evening game at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 19.

The game at the Airport Bridge Club begins at 11 a.m. The Lockport Duplicate Club is hosting the annual Unit 116 Strawberry Social, with strawberries at 12:30 p.m. and the game at 1 p.m., in the Dale Center , 33 Ontario St. , Lockport .

Congratulations to the winners locally in the World Wide Pairs games last weekend, which involved thousands of players in countries around the globe.
Top score Friday night went to Chris Urbanek and John Toy at the Bridge Center of Buffalo, whose 61.01% was readjusted downward to 60.66% against the world, which was 80th in the U.S. and 335th worldwide.
Saturday’s local leaders were Bev Cohen and Judy Padgug, whose 62.80% at the Bridge Center of Buffalo was readjusted to 64.73%, which was 48th in the U.S. and 98th worldwide. Saleh Fetouh and Jay Levy, winners at the Bridge Center on Saturday with 64.58%, were readjusted downward to 62.10% against the world, making them 115th in the U.S. and 243rd worldwide.
